About the American Standard Version

The American Standard Version is the American edition of the Revised Version of 1881 to 1885, which American scholars helped prepare. The New Testament appeared in 1900 and the complete Bible in 1901. Its copyright expired on January 1, 1957.

It prints the divine name as Jehovah, about 6,800 times in the Old Testament. Its close, literal wording made it a base for later translations, including the World English Bible.

Two verses in the ASV

A Psalm of David. Jehovah is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Psalm 23:1, ASV

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.

John 3:16, ASV

Questions

Is the American Standard Version public domain?

Yes. Its copyright expired in 1957.

Why are some verses empty in the ASV?

The ASV follows Greek manuscripts that do not contain them, so 16 verse numbers have no text, such as Matthew 17:21.

Why does the ASV say Jehovah?

Its translators chose to render the Hebrew divine name as a name, Jehovah, where the KJV prints LORD.
