How to read the Bible offline
Short answer
Open a translation on this site while you are online, tap Save offline, then add the site to your home screen. From then on every chapter, search and your bookmarks open with no connection. One translation takes about 0.9 MB to download.
Step 1: save a translation
One download of about 0.9 MB, then every KJV chapter opens with no connection.
One download of about 0.9 MB, then every WEB chapter opens with no connection.
One download of about 0.9 MB, then every ASV chapter opens with no connection.
You can also save from any translation page. Saving stores the full text in the browser's storage for this site; chapter pages are then built on the device when there is no connection.
Step 2: install the app
Installing puts Offline Bible on your home screen or desktop and opens it in its own window. It uses the same saved text, so there is nothing more to download.
iPhone and iPad
- Open offlinebible.org in Safari.
- Tap the Share button.
- Tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.
Android
- Open offlinebible.org in Chrome.
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Tap Install app or Add to Home screen, then confirm.
Windows, Mac, Chromebook and Linux
- In Chrome or Edge, click the install icon at the right end of the address bar, or choose Install in the browser menu.
- In Safari on a Mac, choose File, then Add to Dock.
If your browser shows no install option, bookmark the site instead. Saved translations still open offline in that browser.
What works offline
| Feature | With no connection |
|---|---|
| Chapters of a saved translation | All 1,189 |
| Pages you opened before | Yes |
| Search | In any saved translation |
| Bookmarks, plan progress, text settings | Yes, stored on the device |
| Copy and share a verse | Copy yes; sharing needs a connection for the other app |
Storage and keeping it saved
Each translation uses about 4.1 MB of storage. The site asks the browser to keep this storage persistent, which most browsers grant for installed apps. On iPhone and iPad, Safari can clear a website's stored data after seven days of Safari use without a visit to the site; an app added to the Home Screen keeps its own count and its data stays. Installing the app is the reliable way to keep the Bible saved on Apple devices.
If a chapter does not open offline
- Check the translation page: the button reads "KJV saved" when the text is stored.
- Private or incognito windows discard storage when closed; use a normal window.
- Clearing browsing data removes saved translations and bookmarks. Save again while online.
Questions
Can I read the Bible without Wi-Fi or data?
Yes. After you save a translation once, every chapter opens with no Wi-Fi and no mobile data.
Do I need to download an app from an app store?
No. The site installs from the browser, so there is no store account and updates arrive on their own.
Can I save more than one translation?
Yes. Save any or all three; each takes about 4.1 MB.
